Help the Houston Food Bank (Community Service)
CORPS will be working with the Houston Food Bank to help pack boxes with food that will be distributed to those in need. This is a great opportunity to help combat hunger in the Houston area, as well as assist an organization that does really terrific work for a variety of groups. Here are some facts about the Houston Food Bank: • A private, nonprofit organization • Seeks food donations, distributes to local charitable programs • Founded 1982 • 35 million pounds distributed last year • 80,000 different people fed each week • 498,000 different people fed each year • Nearly 400 hunger relief agencies in 18 southeast Texas counties: o Church food pantries o Homeless shelters o Safe havens for the battered and abused o Nutrition sites for children and the elderly • More than 100,000 volunteer hours contributed annually • 73,000 square feet of warehouse and office space at central location, in addition to 66,000 offsite If you are interested in attending this event look at THE INFORMATION PACKET. This contains safety instructions, a map to the warehouse as well as a liability waiver that is required to work in the warehouse (very similiar to the one we filled out to work at the Habitat for Humanity warehouse).
