Information for New Jersey Voters:

If you have registered to vote in New Jersey, you have the right to vote.

You also have the right to:

  • Vote in private
  • Vote if you are in line to vote when the polls close
  • Vote on an emergency ballot if the voting machine is not working
  • Bring voting materials (such as the sample ballot, but not campaign materials) into the voting booth to help you vote
  • Take a reasonable amount of time to cast your vote
  • Have someone of your choice assist you if you are blind, have a physical disability, or cannot read the ballot on the machine
    • If you are alone, two board workers of opposite political parties may help you. You have the right to have one or both board workers assist you – it is your choice

You should bring identification with you to the polls in case you need it. You may be required to show ID under these circumstances:

  • you are a first-time voter who registered by mail after January 1, 2003 and did not satisfy the identification requirements at the time you registered
  • you did not complete certain sections of your voter registration form or these sections were not legible
  • your right to vote is challenged
  • Acceptable forms of ID include any current and valid photo ID (including a driver’s license, student or job ID, military or other government ID, store membership ID, United States passport) or any current document with your name and address on it (including a bank statement, pay check, car registration, government check or document, non-photo NJ driver’s license, rent receipt, sample ballot, or utility bill)

You have the right to request a provisional (paper) ballot if you are required to show ID but do not have one or you encounter a problem with your registration.

  • After the polls close, the County Board of Election verify and count provisional ballots
  • You are required to submit a copy of your ID for your provisional ballot to be counted.

If your vote is lawfully challenged, and a majority (3) of the board workers vote to uphold the challenge, you have the right to go to a Superior Court Judge to request a court order to vote, and lawyers will be there to help you, or to vote at the polls by provisional ballot. If the board ties, then you have the right to vote on machine.

If you have a problem that you cannot resolve with the board workers, please call 1-877-344-VOTE (8683).
