Obama Delivers Powerful Father's Day Message

The Obama family celebrated Father's Day together, attending services at Chicago's Apostolic Church of God.

Obama delivered a speech on fatherhood from the pulpit, and he didn't shy away from confronting difficult issues
"Too many fathers are also missing. Too many fathers are MIA. Too many fathers are AWOL. Missing from too many lives and too many homes. They've abandoned their responsibilities, they're acting like boys instead of men, and the foundations of our family have suffered because of it. You know and I know this is true everywhere, but nowhere is it more true than in the African American community," he said, delivering his straight-talking message to the African American congregation.
Obama continued, showing his commitment to confronting problems directly with honest solutions
"We can't simply write these problems off to past injustices. Those injustices are real. There's a reason why our families are just in disrepair, and some of it has to do with a tragic history, but we can't keep on using that as an excuse."
We need to be honest with ourselves if we are to rally together around the common causes of our time. Showing himself as the unconventional democrat that he is, Obama said it's not just government that we need to look toward to solve our problems, we must also look to ourselves
He recognized that the government has to change in order to improve the economy and schools, which is why he's running for president. But, he added, "The change we need is not just gonna come from government. It's not just gonna come from a president. It's gonna come from us. It's gonna come from each and every one of us. We need families to raise our children. We need fathers to recognize that responsibility just doesn't end at conception. That doesn't just make you a father. What makes you a man is not the ability to have a child. Any fool can have a child. That doesn't make you a father. It's the courage to raise a child that makes you a father."
A powerful Father's Day message indeed.

Best,
D. Tree

"So on this Father's Day I will for the first time in my life give tribute to a father: our Democrat nominee for president Barack Obama, who throughout the tortuous primary never missed a single birthday or parent-teacher conference for his two daughters."

treading on the toes of thee AA? It should be interesting to see how that plays over the next month or so. He sounded like a preacher there. I know black preachers make statements all the time on the subject, but, it's not expected to come from your politician.

Unconventional, indeed.

it is bold. But he does back up what he said with statistics. It is an undeniable fact that what he said is true so he can't be faulted on that note.

Still there is something about the president to be speaking from a pulpit that might not be the best platform.

But what do I know? No more than anyone else and I do have his best interests at heart.

"Obama--stay out of the frigging pulpit." that's my advice.

i hear what you are saying Liz, and i believe strongly in the separation of church and state.

but for better or for worse, this man's family and their faith have been dragged into the public arena and put under a microscope - perhaps more than any candidate before, precisely because they go to predominantly black churches, and this is something many in America have never been exposed to.

thus - taking broken eggs and making an omelet as they say - i think Barack made a good move in showing some of the positive (and difficult) subjects that get talked about in black churches to a wider audience.

What bull! All his speeches are powerful because he has practiced for years copying quotes from great people well into the past. He gets his writings from really old manuscripts that would be difficult to trace. And he is good at making these copied words sound like he made them up. He lacks experience to be a Pres but he is good at deliving those old words.

I don't know if Eleanor Dennison is a Democrat, Republican or whatever. I do know how wrong she is and how full of hate her heart is toward our nominee. She needs our prayers.

He did give a great speech.

It was much needed....however,..... it would be easier to like Obama if he did not agree with McCain on not allowing same sex marriages. Can't help it, still wish Obama was as good and progressively effective as Clinton.

Wish there was someone who could appeal to Obama to get him to differ on that issue with McCain, wish Obama would support same sex marriages and move into the 21st Century.

Can someone in his campaign please talk to him about that?

Also, please tell him to get rid of NCLB, TOTALLY. We do not need Bush's NCLB, legacy what-so-ever. If he did those two things, the National Federation of Teachers would be very supportive, as well as other core groups, women, gay and working class.

Gay rights, No NCLB.

Nice post hon.
