I don't see it as dumbing things down as much as it is being far more succinct. People aren't dumb: They're impatient.
The deeper issue is how communication has evolved. The evening news will only televise a five second clip of a political speech. People want the bottom line to politics.
That's why these tag lines are so important. They should be used to repetitively hammer a message... and also to entice voters to learn more through the internet.
