About the Author
We are looking to impower new members to get involved in their community, state, and national levels. We will direct you to the recources to get things done.

Clearly there are some posters on this blog in need of information (that is, information provided from sources other than Glenn Beck).

So, perhaps we should start posting little facts to keep the more combative members of this site informed. That way we can help them to either make better arguments, or perhaps we'll even persuade them to our side. Think its impossible? Well, one must remember even the most belligerent trolls come here for a reason: they must be confused or insecure about their own beliefs and they must be curious about ours.

So let this be the first installment of a series of posts sharing information that will hopefully educate us all.

Claim: most of the Founding Fathers were "Deists."
Fact: True
Question: but what exactly is Deism anyway?
The implications of Isaac Newton's physical theories of mechanics, which treated the universe as if it were a machine (hence the term "mechanics") built by a creating god yet running on its own principles independent of the interference of the creating god (though Newton never denied that God couldn't interefere, just that he didn't), encompassed much more than physical change and movement. Soon other areas of experience came to be regarded as mechanistic and independent of divine interference: social structures, economics, politics, and so forth. Each of these areas could be understood and manipulated solely through rational methods, since they operated through consistent and orderly laws and principles

The philosophes of mid-eighteenth century France developed this mechanistic view of the universe into a radically revised version of Christianity they called deism.
Drawing on Newton's description of the universe as a great clock built by the Creator and then set in motion, the deists among the philosophes argued that everything—physical motion, human physiology, politics, society, economics—had its own set of rational principles established by God which could be understood by human beings solely by means of their reason. This meant that the workings of the human and physical worlds could be understood without having to bring religion, mysticism, or divinity into the explanation. The Deists were not atheists; they simply asserted that everything that concerned the physical and human universes could be comprehended independently of religious concerns or explanations.
LINK

People who don't really understand what Deism is like to use it as a way to claim the Founders saw America as a decidedly Christian nation, and that there should be no separation between church and state.

The fact is quite the opposite.

The Founders, inspired by the Philosophes of the Enlightement, believed that religion and laws should absolutely be separate. They also believed religion was a bad influence on societies and was the cause for much war and suffering. They believed in the power of rational thought, laws, and government, to improve the quality of life through scientific progress, rational behavior, and improved social structures (a.k.a. what conservatives lamely call "entitlement programs").

So I hope that clears it up for anyone who is curious or confused about the Founders intentions, and about what Deism means.

Before I go, I'll leave you all with one more definition of Deism
Deism: Deism is a term coined in the philosophe movement and applies to two related ideas: a) religion should be reasonable and should result in the highest moral behavior of its adherents; b) the knowledge of the natural world and the human world has nothing to do whatsoever with religion and should be approached completely free from religious ideas or convictions.
Best wishes to my fellow patriotic Democrats, and thanks for all that you do to make the world a better place.

Best,
D. Tree
I just was forwarded an email from an elderly family member. It calls for a boycott of the new "muslim" stamp.
It was soooooooooo bad on soooooo many levels.

The source appears to be:
Peggy Smith
Ada County Highway District | 3775 Adams St. Garden City, Idaho 83714
(On Government time?) Now Ms. Smith may have forwarded this, but it was from a government computer and is clearly discriminatory.
Far from patriotic, I find this unamerican. I would remind the author that many muslim americans have also fought for our freedoms and that this country is made up of many peoples and many faiths. Violoent acts are certainly not confined to muslims. Just watch your local news and see how many of those arrested are muslim. Misguided people do bad things.
HERE IS THE email...
_______

USPS New 42-Cent Stamp!!! Celebrates Muslim holiday.
If there is only ONE thing you forward today... let it be this!

REMEMBER the MUSLIM bombing of Pan Am Flight 103!
REMEMBER the MUSLIM bombing of the World Trade Center in 1993!
REMEMBER the MUSLIM bombing of the Marine Barracks in Lebanon !
REMEMBER the MUSLIM bombing of the military Barracks in Saudi Arabia !
REMEMBER the MUSLIM bombing of the American Embassies in Africa !
REMEMBER the MUSLIM bombing of the USS COLE!
REMEMBER the MUSLIM attack on 9/11/2001 !
REMEMBER all the AMERICAN lives that were lost in those vicious MUSLIM attacks!

Now President Obama has directed the United States Postal Service to REMEMBER and HONOR the EID MUSLIM holiday season with a new commemorative 42 Cent First Class Holiday Postage Stamp..

REMEMBER to adamantly & vocally BOYCOTT this stamp, when you are purchasing your stamps at the post office. All you have to say is "No thank you, I do not want that Muslim Stamp on my letters!"

To use this stamp would be a slap in the face to all those AMERICANS who died at the hands of those whom this stamp honors..

REMEMBER ~ Pass this along to every Patriotic AMERICAN that you know and let's get the word out !!!

Here is something to chew on .... They (MUSLIMS) are getting their own stamp! BUT, don't dare to dream of posting the ten commandments on federal property! This is truly UNBELIEVABLE !!!

I hope someone looks into this.

Below is a list of Reps who voted NO on Healthcare. I got the info from the Washington Post.

My Representative, BRAD ELLSWORTH, voted YES.
THANK-YOU from the bottom of my heart. I went door to door speaking for you, Mr. Ellswoth, as I did for our President and now am proud to say you upheld your end by voting for the Healthcare so many of your people need. I heard it over and over, from house to house. Now don't forget the rest.. read the Platform, and remember those who came to the polls for you.
Thank-you Ms. Pelosi, for my children and grandchildren. Thank-you for all the people I spoke with last year, many of whom, registered to vote in hope of healthcare reform.

Dennis Kucinich is on this list. I agree with him much of the time. He is the only one on the list who, I KNOW, did it for noble,(if misguided, IMHO), reasons. I'm sure there are a few others.

Throwing out the baby because the bath water is dirty is not an answer. We need to clean the water. On this bill, it will take time and revisiting it for possibly years.

I'm pragmatic enough to see that we need to get our foot in the door, take what we can get, and live to fight another day. This is not over. We can add to this later. We have to get it started.

BUT!!!!!!!!! There are others on this list who voted for special interests and not for us.
I am a "straight ticket" democrat. If they are on my ticket, they get my vote, whether I like it or not. I do not vote Republican for policy reasons. Their platform shows me, they do not believe as I do.
I resent those who carry our banner and do not work for our causes.
Some of our Senators and Representatives really need to read OUR platform.

HEALTHCARE
CLEAN ENERGY
ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION
EDUCATION
CIVIL RIGHTS
WORKER'S RIGHTS
and all the other things this party stands for.

REMEMBER WHO VOTED AGAINST US. DEMAND A REASON! VOTE THEM OUT IF THEY ARE GETTING IN THE WAY OF THE PEOPLE. WE HAVE PRIMARIES! THEY NEED COMPETITION JUST AS THE INSURANCE COMPANIES DO.

Is your Rep on this list?
Adler, John Herbert
Altmire, Jason
Baird, Brian Norton
Barrow, John Jenkins
Boccieri, John A.
Boren, David Daniel
Boucher, Frederick Carlyle
Boyd, F. Allen
Bright, Bobby Neal

Question them and if you don't like the answer, get a progressive candidate in the next primary. Go to the meetings.. We can't expect Obama to do everything.
WE have other issues we need to address.. watch how they vote.
If your Rep voted yes, call and thank them. It has not been easy for them. The misinformation has been brutal and I know here in Indiana, the negative ads have been non-stop and very confusing. Many of our Reps will need help in the future because of the money which has been pouring out against our policies. They will need help educating the voters about WHY we need our policies to be enacted.
If we want them to work for us, we have to help them.
It's up to us to MAKE our government work.
peace,
marsha

Aside from lower premiums, what is your expectation of coverage or benefits?

In other words: what health benefits do you not have now that you would expect to be covered under a government mandated plan?

I discovered today that our friend Jake has passed. There is a memorial site on facebook.
I do not know how.. or why.
Peace to you, Jake.

...Also, let me put to you another simple question: Have you as an individual paid too high a price for these gains? Plausible self-seekers and theoretical die-hards will tell you of the loss of individual liberty. Answer this question also out of the facts of your own life. Have you lost any of your rights or liberty or constitutional freedom of action and choice? Turn to the Bill of Rights of the Constitution, which I have solemnly sworn to maintain and under which your freedom rests secure. Read each provision of that Bill of Rights and ask yourself whether you personally have suffered the impairment of a single jot of these great assurances. I have no question in my mind as to what your answer will be. The record is written in the experiences of your own personal lives.
In other words, it is not the overwhelming majority of the farmers or manufacturers or workers who deny the substantial gains of the past year. The most vociferous of the doubting Thomases may be divided roughly into two groups: First, those who seek special political privilege and, second, those who seek special financial privilege. About a year ago I used as an illustration the 90% of the cotton manufacturers of the United States who wanted to do the right thing by their employees and by the public but were prevented from doing so by the 10% who undercut them by unfair practices and un-American standards. It is well for us to remember that humanity is a long way from being perfect and that a selfish minority in every walk of life -- farming, business, finance and even Government service itself -- will always continue to think of themselves first and their fellow-being second.

In the working out of a great national program which seeks the primary good of the greater number, it is true that the toes of some people are being stepped on and are going to be stepped on. But these toes belong to the comparative few who seek to retain or to gain position or riches or both by some short cut which is harmful to the greater good. In the execution of the powers conferred on it by Congress, the Administration needs and will tirelessly seek the best ability that the country affords. Public service offers better rewards in the opportunity for service than ever before in our history -- not great salaries, but enough to live on. In the building of this service there are coming to us men and women with ability and courage from every part of the Union. The days of the seeking of mere party advantage through the misuse of public power are drawing to a close. We are increasingly demanding and getting devotion to the public service on the part of every member of the Administration, high and low...

The conservatives have been using the same tactics for over seventy years. They attempt to scare the sheeple into believing their rights are being stripped away when, in fact, they're not. Over the past decade and a half, conservatives have stripped away more rights and protections of the every day working person than even the most savvy of politicos realize.

The comments from above are from an address made by the great Franklin D. Roosevelt on 28JUN34. Isn't ironic how they ring true today? Once again, the conservative money worshippers in the Republican Party have attempted to divide us by spreading malicious, untrue statements about our liberties. They're trying to convince the sheeple President Obama is turning our great nation into a socialist or communist form of government. They were lying seventy-five years ago and they're lying again.

So we are called to once again defend this great nation of ours against all enemies foreign and domestic. We know who our foreign enemies are. Fortunately, we know who our domestic enemies are as well. Recognize them for what they are; Americans in name only. A real American cares about what happens to their neighbor, their state or commonwealth, their fellow Americans.

Does the rhetoric from the political right reflect those traditional American values? Does a Republican and\or a conservative hollering, "Get a job", to a handicapped person attempting to ask a question at a town hall meeting instill a sense of pride in your fellow citizens? Does a person carrying a firearm to an event where the first African-American POTUS is speaking instill a sense of security? There can be only one logical answer to that question. Isn't it ironic that the modern day Republican Party has been nicknamed the party of no because that is the answer to those questions.

I am, in no way, as elequent a speaker or writer as the great FDR nor do I presume to be. I wish I were. But I cannot sit idly by while nefarious right wing forces attempt to overthrow the duly elected U.S. government with talk of coups and insurrections. Is this what the Republican Party has devolved to now that they've, once again, been cast into the political wilderness where they belong? Sadly, the answer would appear to be yes.

Be prepared my fellow Americans. Be prepared to use rheotric, or any other tool at our disposal, to beat back those who measure a man's worth simply by the contents of his checkbook, not his character. Be prepared to defend your country, your way of life, and your POTUS from the forces of darkness.

In closing, I quote from the Holy Bible, Ecclesiastes 3:7-13.

7 a time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;

8 a time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.

9 What profit hath he that worketh in that for which he laboreth?

10 I have seen the travail which God hath given to the sons of men to be exercised in it.

11 He hath made every thing beautiful in his time. Also He hath set the world in their heart, so that no man can find out the work that God maketh from the beginning to the end.

12 I know that there is no good in them, but for a man to rejoice and to do good in his life,

13 and also that every man should eat and drink and enjoy the good of all his labor: it is the gift of God.

Claim your gift from God. But prepare yourselves for the evils conservatives would wrought upon us especially those who claim to come in the name of God. And the next time some conservative and\or Republican says that every American does not deserve the basic rights of food, shelter, clothing, and healthcare, do not be afraid to call a spade a spade or, in this case, an evildoer and evildoer. Shout it from the rooftops. Arm yourselves with intelligence, wit, and guile. And if all else fails, arm yourselves in the traditional sense for their rhetoric indicates those on the radical right are doing such. Put the proverbial spotlight on this person, or group of people, and let sunlight be the best antiseptic. We can rid ourselves of the cancer of conservatism. Like any medical procedure that any American should be entitled to, it may hurt at first but it'll be well worth it in the end.
Last night our President backed down the special interests and negative forces in Washington and across the country, and stood up for seniors, middle class families and everyone else who uses healthcare whether they have insurance or not.
I have never been so proud of a vote in my life as I am casting a vote to elect him!

Today we have a duty. If we want this, we can make it happen.
1. Call your Congressmen and Senators TODAY. Tell them you want the Obama plan, and you will be watching to see how they vote.
2. Email your friends and family, tell them to call their Congressmen and Senators.
3. Wear your buttons and talk to people in the grocery store, the post office, everywhere. This is how we won the election against the odds, remember? We can do this.
4. If you have a yard sign.. put it out again! Show support for our President!

This is a call to PUBLIC SERVICE.
We have a unique opportunity to be a part of something which will save lives for longer than we are alive. What a noble and worthwhile cause.
Tell a neighbor and save a women with breast cancer.
Tell a friend and save a child with swine flu.
Tell a brother and save a senior who can't afford medicine.
Tell a sister and save a man with prostate cancer.
How many of our fellow Americans must die because of lack of care or no care?
We can fix that!
LET'S DO THIS!
peace,
marsha riggan

ps.. Rep Wilson SC called our President a Liar at a Joint Session... He deserves a complaint call. It's like slapping your grandmother. Some things you DO NOT DO! Congressman Joe Wilson (R-SC) ... 212 Cannon House Office Building • Washington, DC 20515 • Phone: (202) 225-2452
For those of you who don't know me... this is a repost from 2007.
I am old enough to have been a "hippie" if there is such a thing.. I only met people, many of whom felt as I did... I am a Friend.

Words have tremendous power. A single word can hurt or heal. I am no great writer but, I know what I think, and I believe the more people in a dialog, the better the results.
I usually sign off on my comments with PEACE.
The reason I do this is simple. I want peace. I know you all will read the word and for a moment it is in your mind. During that moment in your mind it is a powerful thought. The more people that think that thought, the more powerful it becomes.
I would like you all to consider how many times someone says to you, "have a nice day". If we replaced that with, "Peace" or "Have a Peaceful day" , how much could we pass that thought around. How many politicians would take notice if suddenly they heard the word everyday, everywhere, all day long? Could we make them notice? It could be the new trend. We could make it so.
With so many people saying the word every day, I believe we could make an impact on the thought processes of many of our leaders.
This, I'm sure sounds very idealistic but, just last week I heard of a man who changed the day of many people by buying an angry man a Starbuck's coffee.
A small act if passed around can grow into powerful good.
Give it a shot...the next time you start to say, "have a nice day" replace it with, "Peace". Sign your emails "Peacefully yours" or "Yours in Peace", or "In hope of Peace".
Maybe we can show Washington how many people want peace before the election.
If it doesn't work in that way, we will still be spreading goodwill, and this is the season to start it.
Peace to you all, Marsha
To President Obama, his staff and his supporters in Congress.

We watched with our grand-daughter tonight. Thank-you to you and your staff for your work..
This is text book leadership.. Lead by example and expect others to follow. All the work behind the scenes shows..I was afraid we were going down.. I don't think that anymore, just this week the bills have been changing.
I have my buttons and my sign on the door. My bumper sticker should be on the way...
VISIBLE SUPPORT!
If you want to do positive things to help...
1. WEAR YOUR OBAMA BUTTONS. Tell people why.
2. Put out a yard or window sign from the campaign or for healthcare.
3. CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVES! Tell them you WILL be watching how they vote. Remind them that THEY have a public health plan.
Our people are doing great things.
WE must be part of the solution.
I am proud to have a president who is working for me and my family.. I will continue to work for him, and those who support him.
Peace to you all,
marsha riggan

I just heard some Dick, (literally his name was Dick something), saying the "bush recession" had ended and the "Obama recession" was beginning. He also was slamming government healthcare... Saying we don't have enough doctors to treat everyone and we will have "rationed care".
It was Bush propaganda all over again. I hate NBC these days... Where is ABC anyway? I can't even get a signal. UGH!
If we lose on public healthcare it will be because WE dropped the ball!
CONTACT YOUR CONGRESSMEN- WRITE LETTERS-CALL THEIR OFFICES!

The switchboard number is 202-225-3121. For people who don't know their reps or senators just give the operator your zip code they'll direct your call to the right office.

Some pages to check out on facebook..
One is a site which calls for the termination of public healthcare for congress!!

My senator - Richard Burr - has become quite outspoken on the budget cuts that he feels will hurt HBCU's in my state of North Carolina. He has expressed skepticism that President Obama's administration will continue to be committed to strenghthening the HBCU's because of the budget cuts set to move forward.

Well, for one - since when has Senator Burr ever cared about the HBCU's? Not until he realized that there are 11 in our state alone or just because he's all about making sure that the these schools get their fare share? Hint: it's not the latter.

You see - the funds allocated to the HBCU's were always a temporary fix - rolled out under the Bush administration and due to expire under President Obama. President Obama has always stated that he is comitted to the vision and mission of ensuring that "the doors of opportunity and higher education remain open to all students." To speak to the contrary is misleading.

Organizing for America is launching a series of Listening Tours throughout the country to reconnect with supporters and begin to build on the incredible grassroots organization that was created during the campaign.

We have one goal with these meetings -- to listen.

Your ideas will be used to help write state-specific plans for Organizing for America in 2009 and beyond.
At these meetings, supporters are able to meet state staff members, hear about some of the lessons learned during the election, and offer thoughts on how best to organize in their communities.

Your ideas will then be used to write state-specific plans for Organizing for America in 2009 and beyond.

In many ways these small (and sometimes not so small) gatherings echo the same type of meetings that took place in diners and homes in the early days of the campaign, over two years ago. This time however, the focus is not on any one election, but on how to build support for the President's agenda on a wide range of issues, and how to bring about the change that so many of you worked so hard for.

The campaign brought an unprecedented number of new voices into the process. Our goal now is to make sure those voices remain at the center of the debate as the President and Congress move forward to address the challenges we face.

Hey you all get voting-- The Repulsicans have already voted... Now it is our turn!!! Unfortunately there is is only an "A" not A+, so I had to settle for just an A...

Send this on,

I have difficulty getting to the computer regularly these days...weather, library closings(unexpected...), et al. I watched Obama's speech to Congress and was very impressed with it. He spoke to us all like we are the intelligent beings that we are and defined the problems we face and possible solutions well. I was relieved to hear him discuss Afghanistan further. I was pleased to hear a more thoughtful and nuanced analysis. I personally have been less than enthusiastic about the US being in Afghanistan in the first place...no country or empire that has ever gone to the area has ever been able to subjugate it and I do not see how it will be any different for the US. Jim Hightower's latest Lowdown highlights the issues surrounding Afghanistan including secret prisons and use of torture there. But Barack did mention a new look at the situation in Afghanistan to include economic development and help. I know that it is not easy to just leave once in...but, military might alone is not the answer.

Fundamental changes would have to occur in Afghanistan and Pakistan also. The Taliban(an offshoot of the Mujahadin the CIA organized)must be permanently defanged for everyone's sake...especially women!!! I would like to hear what anyone else thinks...and I will get back here when I can... Lee:-)   Read More »
I refuse to acknowledge another ignorant remark. My new mantra:

Ignore Ignorance!

Well, here we go.  Can someone please tell me WHAT in the world is the matter with some of these republicans?  President Obama is not a puppeteer, desiring to have only those around him that "think" just like him.  What he believes in is intelligent, honest, civil debate with views from ALL sides, not just one side.

Judd now has abruptly withdrawn his nomination as Commerce Secretary for one reason alone: he  can not think outside the box.  His loss.

"Fox News' Van Susteren ignored Graham's economic recovery falsehoods"

"Summary: Fox News' Greta Van Susteren allowed Sen. Lindsey Graham to advance the myth that the economic recovery legislation would "reward ACORN." In fact, neither the House version nor the proposed Senate version mentions ACORN. The false claim is based on a misrepresentation of a provision that would appropriate $4.19 billion for neighborhood stabilization activities, but which would be distributed through competitive processes; ACORN has denied that it is eligible, or plans to apply, for those funds"
