GARNER - About 10 years ago, I interviewed a Southern Baptist seminary-educated minister who was pastor of a Carrboro church. A strong proponent of the Second Amendment, that pastor told me the day might come when American Christians might have to take up arms against the state. His comments, published in The Chapel Hill News, didn't as much as raise an eyebrow at the time. No federal agents asked to listen to the tape recording of my interview with the pastor. Times have changed. Two of the Raleigh U.S. Attorney's claims against alleged terror suspect Daniel Patrick Boyd are that he made "radical statements" and that "he urged the group of young Muslims to raise money and learn how to handle weapons to prepare for a violent jihad by insurgents and fighters overseas." My young children got to know Boyd when he was proprietor of the Blackstone Market, a small grocery store Boyd co-owned and managed in Garner's Forest Hills Shopping Center.

My children said Boyd "was really nice and funny." He gave them discounts when they didn't have enough money to pay for a piece of baklava or a nectar drink. My children were sad when Blackstone closed. The government, however, is painting a very different picture of Boyd, calling him the mastermind of a terrorist cell bent on waging a holy war.   Read More »
Frank Lynch hereby calls upon President Barack Obama to make it illegal to wear burkas in America.

We must immediately stop issuing drivers licenses, passports, immigration papers of any sort, or any government identification or registration instruments to any person who even partially covers their face.

Further, under the hate crime laws, it should be a felony punishable by five years imprisonment at hard labor to refuse to shake hands because a person is a woman.

It is time for our government to stop all this ridiculous political correctness of not wanting to offend muslims. We must grow a spine and stand up to extremists. All people are equal, and we cannot and must not tolerate any practices that demean women in any way.

I am disappointed in our President that European countries are taking action to recognize the sanctity of womanhood before our own President does.

President Obama, please exercise leadership in banning the burka, banning the refusal to shake hands with women, and all other extremist traditions that demean women.

Further, all non-profits must be required to ban burkas from their officers, employees, Boards of Directors or Trustees.

Eveery educational institution, from preschool through graduate school, must ban burkas from their premises.

President Nicolas Sarkozydeclared Monday that the Islamic burqa is not welcome in France, branding the face-covering, body-length gown as a symbol of subservience that suppresses women's identities and turns them into "prisoners behind a screen."

But there was a mixed message in the tough words: an admission that the country's long-held principle of ethnic assimilation -- which insists that newcomers shed their traditions and adapt to French culture -- is failing because it doesn't give immigrants and their French-born children a fair chance.

In a high-profile speech to lawmakers in the historic chateau at Versailles, Sarkozy said the head-to-toe Muslim body coverings were in disaccord with French values -- some of the strongest language against burqas from a European leader at a time when some Western officials have been seeking to ease tensions with the Muslim world.

"In our country, we cannot accept that women be prisoners behind a screen, cut off from all social life, deprived of all identity," Sarkozy said to extended applause of the lawmakers gathered where French kings once held court.

"The burqa is not a religious sign, it's a sign of subservience, a sign of debasement -- I want to say it solemnly," he said. "It will not be welcome on the territory of the French Republic."

The Netherlands is about to ban burkas. The country's hardline Integration Minister, Rita Verdonk, known as the Iron Lady for her series of tough anti-immigration measures, told Parliament that she was going to investigate where and when the burka should be banned. The burka, traditional clothing in some Islamic societies, covers a woman's face and body, leaving only a strip of gauze for the eyes.

Mrs Verdonk gave warning that the "time of cosy tea-drinking" with Muslim groups had passed and that natives and immigrants should have the courage to be critical of each other.

She recently cancelled a meeting with Muslim leaders who refused to shake her hand because she was a woman. Great lady!

Although Netherlands has the same inane freedom of expression laws passed in America, she plans to make it a matter of public safety.
This is my own opinion. I don't have solid statistics...

Two weeks from today is NJASK(New Jersey standardized state) testing. I just have to say that it's totally and completely absurd. Look okay, I'm not in 8th grade math, but I'm on pretty good relations with the new math teacher. He's been giving out practice packets recently, and some of that stuff, I've just learned, and I'm 2 years beyond that already. A lot of my friends bring their practice packets to me so I can check them, and to be honest, some of the smartest people in my grade can barely get a 75% on it. I consider this kind of ridiculous.

My writing teacher also has to endure teaching essay prompts in a different way, since the NJASK requires a format of writing that is not only foreign to us, but it is a form that, if you read it, it would sound like a 4 year old child writing.

Also, my Science teacher has to go off topic just to cover the subjects tested on the NJASK.

My question is this.

If this state test is a PROFICIENCY ASSESSMENT, then shouldn't it be testing what we learn, and not us learning what's going to be tested?
since I came here.

It's been a long time since I've checked in with politics, and I'm completely out of the loop. I didn't even participate in the Obama campaign!! I only managed to yell at some of the republicans in my school, and say "Go Obama" like 5 times.

I caught the end of the Maddoff scandal, and did a report on the stimulus package, which I really didn't understand. My teacher said it sounded great, but I probably confused her with random statistics and big words...

I just wanted to say that almost all of my 8th grade class is left wing, and totally supported Obama, which is kind of interesting, since most of their parents are right wing. Back in November, a few classmates and I organized a mock election, and Obama won by a long shot.

All I can do right now in the midst of NJASK testing and graduation is blog about my opinion on Barack Obama's "Audacity of Hope", so bear with me, or buzz off!

International Women's Day
http://www.internationalwomensday.com

International Women's Day (IWD) 8 March is a day of global celebration for women's advancement. Thousands of events occur each year to honour the women of the past, to celebrate the women of today, and to prepare for our daughters of tomorrow.

Gathering up every minute of happiness.. despite the negative news reports. And my painting of Our New President. Happy Inauguration Day Everyone!

I think there is something to be said for getting away from it all. And what better time to step away from our day to day routine than right now in our present economic and world condition. I have to admit, I am one of these people who likes,.ok,..NEEDS to be in touch with daily NEWS. When we first brought the baby home and we were running on little sleep, and I was nursing, well, a lot. I lost track of time, and daily news. It made me feel out of touch, not watching my daily news supply. And Im still like that. I have the news on, off and on throughout the day. Or I check online news sites if I dont listen to the news. And despite the terrible economic news that pumps forth from our tvs and every other imaginable source, I still need and want to listen to the daily news. I need to be in touch with reality. That being said,..I also am finding it helpful to STEP AWAY from the constant drum beat of chicken little screaming that the sky is falling. Dont get me wrong,..I know the realities of our worlds present condition, I dont choose to ignore it. But I do choose to STEP AWAY FROM IT NOW AND THEN. Actually Im not sure if Im choosing to step away, or its just a form of preservation. If you have read my blogs before, you know I believe in the law of attraction and its principles. With that in mind I dont want to spend too much energy getting my emotions too engrossed in the fears that the media is spreading like a plague. So Im trying to live with and accept the reality of where our world currently is, without becoming consumed by the worries so many of us have. And sometimes I get it right. Like the past few weekends. One day my toddler and I spent time with my parents, feeding ducks at the local zoo, getting apple slushys and fresh cookies at a local orchards market. And Daddy went to play some golf. Just being together and thinking only of the moment we were in,..enjoying each other. And then on another weekend, my husband and I and our toddler went to our larger Zoo in St. Louis. And if you want to forget about the world around you, take a toddler to a zoo! You feel their excitement, and their happiness when the miniature train choo choos on by. Doesnt matter that you have been here before, and that the elephant is too far away to get a good look. Nothing matters except that you are all together, and its just a perfectly imperfect day with your family. Memories made. Tired feet. And a sleepy toddler latter. We are ready to go home and feeling,.. could it be,..refreshed? Mentally that is.

Yes, a day at a large zoo walking all over with a toddler left us feeling happy ( ok except during the occasional toddler melt down). So I say, what ever your toddler at the zoo thing is,..just do it. Step Away From The Current Worlds Realities for a while. And refresh.. I say current because I do believe the experts out there are right. This too shall pass. Our world will get back to a more familiar healthy normal. Perhaps a new Happier normal. But it will get there.

And a prayer for everyone out there who is feeling the crush of the reality of the circumstances that our world is experiencing.

But take heart and have faith, as we are now entering a period of change with our New President Barack Obama! Happy Inauguration !

State attorney general asked to protect religious, legal rights

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 12/17/08) A prominent national Islamic civil rights and advocacy group today called on Georgia Attorney General Thurbert E. Baker to bring sanctions against a judge in that state who has repeatedly barred Muslim women wearing religiously-mandated headscarves, or hijabs, from entering his courtroom.

Yesterday, the Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) reported that a Muslim woman was jailed and then released following a dispute over whether she could enter the judge’s courtroom in Douglasville, Ga., while wearing her hijab. In the past year, other Muslim women have either been jailed under similar circumstances or barred from that judge’s court.   Read More »

A Muslim woman arrested for refusing to take off her head scarf at a courthouse security checkpoint said Wednesday that she felt her human and civil rights were violated. A judge ordered Lisa Valentine, 40, to serve 10 days in jail for contempt of court, said police in Douglasville, a city of about 20,000 people on Atlanta's west suburban outskirts.

Valentine violated a court policy that prohibits people from wearing any headgear in court, police said after they arrested her Tuesday.   Read More »

Democrats pick up a House seat in central Ohio

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Democrat Mary Jo Kilroy came from behind Sunday to snatch a central Ohio seat from House Republicans after elections officials tallied provisional ballots.

Kilroy's victory by a little more than 2,000 votes over Republican Steve Stivers put the 15th Congressional District seat into Democratic hands for the first time in 42 years after the retirement of Republican Deborah Pryce.

Franklin County officials released unofficial results Sunday that showed Kilroy with a margin of victory of 2,311 votes out of roughly 300,000 cast, enough to avoid an automatic recount.

Kilroy got 139,582 votes to Stivers' 137,271, or 46 percent to 45 percent. Two minor candidates split the remaining 9 percent. ...

Caroline Kennedy interested in NY Senate seat

WASHINGTON -- Caroline Kennedy is interested in the Senate seat that would open once Hillary Rodham Clinton becomes secretary of state, according to a close relative who says the powerful Kennedy clan is fully behind her rising to the office previously held by her uncle. ...

Once Clinton is confirmed to President-elect Barack Obama's cabinet, New York Gov. David Paterson will appoint someone to fill the seat for two years. ...

Kennedy is the daughter of President John F. Kennedy and a niece of brothers Edward and Robert. Robert Kennedy held the New York seat from 1965 until his assassination in 1968. Edward Kennedy has been a senator from Massachusetts since 1963. ...

Whoever Paterson appoints would serve for two years and then have to run in a special election in 2010, along with Paterson and New York's senior senator, Charles Schumer. The candidate would then have to run again in 2012. ...

Caroline Kennedy is easily the most famous contender for Clinton's Senate seat, but there are plenty of others. New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo is widely known in the state. Paterson could also pick Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown or Tom Suozzi, a Long Island elected official.

There are also a number of House members in the running, including Reps. Carolyn Maloney, Kirsten Gillibrand, Steve Israel, Brian Higgins, Nydia Velazquez and Jerrold Nadler.

According to The Legal Times, Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens, the oldest and longest-serving justice on the Supreme Court, will swear in VP-Elect Joseph Biden as Vice President next month on Innauguration Day.

Vigorous and sharp at 88, he has served on the court for 32 years. In criminal-law and death-penalty cases, Stevens has voted against the government and in favor of the individual more frequently than any other sitting justice.

He files more dissents and separate opinions than any of his colleagues. He is the court's most outspoken defender of the need for judicial oversight of executive power. And in recent years, he has written majority opinions in two of the most important cases ruling against the Bush Administration's treatment of suspected enemy combatants in the war on terror -- an issue the court is revisiting this term when it hears appeals by Guantánamo detainees, challenging their lack of access to federal courts.

Justice Stevens was named to the Court in 1975 by President Gerald Ford. It is rare for a Vice President to be sworn in by a justice appointed by a president of the opposite party, so Vp-Elect Biden's choice to have Stevens swear him in can be seen as a bipartisan gesture -- though Justice Stevens is usually regarded as one of the most liberal justices on the Court.

According to family members and former law clerks, Justice Stevens still writes the first draft of his opinions. He uses the Internet, studied French before a recent vacation in Europe, and has become hooked on Sudoku number puzzles.

In addition, Stevens he has survived prostate cancer and had a bypass heart operation in the 1970s. Since then he has followed a low-fat diet, eating only a grapefruit for lunch.
(LOS ANGELES, CA, 12/4/08) Following an action alert sent out yesterday by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), Fox television network reported receiving an overwhelming positive response from community members about a recent episode of “The Simpsons” that challenged anti-Muslim stereotypes.

The episode, which aired Sunday evening and is titled "Mypods and Boomsticks," highlights anti-Muslim sentiment by featuring a young Muslim character named Bashir and his family who face prejudice after moving to Springfield. In the program, Homer Simpson wrongly suspects that Bashir's family is involved in a terror plot. Bart Simpson befriends Bashir and defends him from bullies.   Read More »
