Americans United to Defeat Mitch McConnell
About the Author
This groups aim is to build up a network of volunteers to help organize the search for a viable candidate and contribute to a successful campaign to defeat Mitch McConnell in 2008.

Democratic Talk Radio has given our Ist Annual Labor Hero of the Year Award to Fran Friel, President of the Pennsylvania Postal Workers for moving his union convention from the hotel in Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania to honor a picket line by the Laborers (LIUNA) Local 135 and the Painters (IUPAT) this past summer.

They encountered significant legal costs and maybe other even larger financial costs by their actions in support of the union brothers and sisters in the building trades. We at Democratic Talk Radio love this example of real labor union solidarity and want to honor it.

Fran Friel and his fellow union leaders from the American Postal Workers Union truly believe that an injury to one is an injury to all. For Fran and the rest of members of the Pennsylvania Postal Workers Union, these are not just words. Their actions show their conviction and sincere devotion to labor solidarity.

When asked to comment on their actions, the President of the Painters (IUPAT) District Council 21 Ken Kraft stated, “THEY not only supported our union I feel they supported the entire building trades movement by not having the convention at a place that uses non-union workers from out of state and then EXPECTS Unions to just book there anyway... It was a great example of how we get it together once in a while between the building trades and the other Labor Council type Unions... But it is also a shame, in Europe NO-ONE would find this unusual, they still get it over there...”

Millions of labor heroes exist in the work force of America. They all deserve recognition and our sincere admiration. Democratic Talk Radio honors them every day for their contribution to economic opportunity and justice.

Political villains were rampant in 2008. It was impossible to give a single award for the injustices committed for solely political reasons this past year. For the first time ever, Democratic Talk Radio was unable to even narrow the infamous winners to just two. We have selected three “Villains of 2008” to share the award.

Our first choice is obvious. Fox News wins the first 2008 villain slot for their disinformation campaign against ACORN. The efforts of Fox News to provide political cover for Republican efforts at voter suppression during the 2008 elections were, in the opinion of Democratic Talk Radio, the lowest thing ever done by Fox News.

The second winner for 2008 political villain is George McGovern. Fans of Democratic Talk Radio may be surprised by this choice. Frankly, we never expected to be giving a former Democratic Presidential candidate a villain of the year award. However, McGovern has lent his name to the Right-Wing, corporate effort to undermine workers’ right to unionize. George McGovern has allied himself with the anti-worker efforts to defeat the Employee Free Choice Act. His TV commercials are frankly an open act on working Americans. McGovern has disgraced himself by joining with the most anti-working class political forces in America and misleading the American public on the nature of the Employee Free Choice Act.

The Senate Republicans out to destroy the American auto industry and the United Auto Workers union are our third villainous winners. Senator Corker of Tennessee, Senator Shelby of Alabama, Senator McConnell of Kentucky, Senator Vitter of Louisiana and their fellow Senate Republicans put the interests of foreign corporations over the interests of the American economy. Since all were opposed by the United Auto Workers in previous elections because of their militantly anti-worker voting records, their efforts are obviously motivated by personal political considerations that directly undermine the national interest. These Senate Republicans have sided with foreign companies to drive down the wages and healthcare benefits of American workers.

The hero of the year selected by Democratic Talk Radio is Al Franken. The American nation should be delighted at his political courage and determination. By insisting that all the votes be counted in the 2008 Minnesota Senate race, Franken has set a good example for all candidates running for office and for American voters. American Democracy has been strengthened by his resolve.

Al Franken will be a great asset should he eventually prevail when all the votes are finally counted. Norm Coleman has been very aggressive in his attempts to undermine a free and fair counting of the ballots.

Hi,
I have started a group on facebook and myspace to encourage interation with the new administration. May I ask that you take a moment to check it out and if it is interesting to you please consider joining?
It is a bottom up group and the membership that votes in the weekly votes will set the agenda for the group.
It might also require giving your opinions on the issues.

The group is called Political Interaction and can currently be found on facebook and at

Gov. Sarah Palin, a virtual paragon of...well, virtue, apparently has been deflowered and exposed for the fraud she really is. The running mate of Mr. Reform, Sen. John McCain, who also touted Gov. Palin's bent for reform, evidently has defrauded the state of Alaska by charging the state's tills for airfare for her daughters to accompany her on state business, even when the daughters were uninvited. Then, the oh-so-honest VP candidate fudged her expense reports to state that her daughters' status on the trips were "state business".   Read More »

Thoughts from an Ex-Republican - They finally beat it out of me 2:01am

I was a Republican for over 25 years, and was active in the Johns Hopkins College Republicans in the late 80's. But these people have lost my confidence and my vote for the foreseeable future.

I'm a 42 year old physician, Major in the USAF, WASP with an income of over 250k - but I will not be cheaply bought by promises of simply lower taxes. The other costs of electing these Republicans are too high.

The only people who seem to be Republican anymore are:

1. Single-issue pro-life voters. Hitler could run for office, and as long as he was pro-life - these guys would vote for him. If they ever bother to adopt the result of these policies, you can bet your ass it’ll be a white kid.

2. Evangelical, ignorant, anti-intellectual racists who believe we are living in the "End Times" and that dinosaurs lived 50,000 years ago. Their personal morality typically includes: getting multiply divorced, shacking up with each other, and producing teenage mothers like there's no tomorrow. This group is well-represented by Sarah Palin and her brood. I mean, you’ve just got to love a woman who speaks in tongues while her teenage daughter gets knocked up. Hey " we can *relate* to her!

As always " the people who screech the loudest about morality and go to church 5 times a week, are also the ones who have often failed to implement that morality in their personal lives.

Want proof? Teenage birthrates are highest in Mississippi, Texas, Arizona, and Arkansas. The states with the lowest teenage birthrates are New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, and Maine.

Rates of divorce follow the same pattern: Highest in “Evangelical” Red States (Arkansas, Alabama, Tennessee and Texas) and lowest in the “Godless Secular” Northeastern Blue States: (Massachusetts, Vermont, Maryland, Delaware and Pennsylvania).

BTW, I’m from Tennessee " but got divorced in Texas!

3. The corporatists and billionaires that cynically manipulate #1 and #2 - knowing that their allegiance is cheaply bought. Their sole issue is ensuring they stay very rich by shifting the tax burden onto the lower classes and ensuring their companies remain deregulated " a euphemism for Above the Law (you may have noticed a little trouble recently on Wall Street related to this). This group is ably represented by McCain and his billionaire house-wrecking wife (that’s right, you Holy Rollers " he *fornicated* with her while still married to his first wife).

Honestly, if you consider yourself a moral, decent, intelligent person - how can you stand to be associated with any of these groups or vote for the people who represent them?
In Wednesday night's debate, John McCain was asked if he would nominate any judge for the Supreme Court who was in favor of Roe v. Wade. Am I the only one who heard his response?   Read More »
What the heck is wrong with McBush. He attacks as the Republicans always do then tells a few supporters they should not then attacks again; Plain is on a seperate campaign attacking and scolding her own rally attendees (of course, inappropriately as they were not protesters but her own supporters who were asking her to speak louder -- hilarious that as she is told she still pretends to understand what just happened); and the campaign flunkies who attempt to use the concerns about their own supporters shouting death threats as some sort of attack on their supporters.
McBush should retract his recent attack on Congressman Lewis, too.
Though I will give McBush credit for one thing, he said that he has the Democrats and media just where he wants them right now. Good for him. Let's work harder to ensure that the turn out is high so he can enjoy election night the same way.

We're in a depression. More evidence from Wave 3 TV news here in Louisville.

I would add to that the fact that the number of people at the closest "Dare to Care" food bank (free, "fresh" food) has increased from about 30-40 a year ago to over 80 today and gradually clmbing.

McCain will simply make things worse even IF (and it's a big if) he doesn't start more wars we can't win.

Obama must win and carry a lot of Democratic congressional reps with him.

Evidently, John McCain is determined to alienate as many folks as he can by virtue of his mouth shooting off his foot.   Read More »
Tonight is the opportunity Barack has needed to finally put McCain in his grave. I sincerely hope that Barack doesn't allow any of John's lies to stand. Veterans issues, trickle down economic voodoo, $800 billion in "new" Obama spending, McCain's health care "tax break"... all of these need to be pounded time and again.
If there's one piece of advice I could give Barack Obama at this point in the electoral campaign it would be to let John McCain take it from here. This is a rather unexpected turn of events. Obama up to this point has run perhaps running the most groundbreaking, politically realigning, historic, and energetic campaign we've seen in our lifetimes. But at this point the biggest factor killing the McCain campaign is John McCain himself.

McCain is doing just about everything wrong right now and he's paying for it big time. During a time of economic crisis, McCain said precisely the wrong thing. Bad habits die hard, I suppose, because it wasn't the first time we heard McCain state that "the fundamentals of the economy are strong". Clearly, Republican strategists did not react quickly enough to inform McCain that the attempt to frame the nation's economic problems as insignificant was now a moot strategy. Or, perhaps they assumed that with all of his political experience he might know better. In any event, as water flooded the deck, the crew panicked, and the old captain never seemed to reestablish authority on the issue. To make it disappear, they tried the implausible excuse that he was referring to the American workers when referring to fundamentals. That's a contextual clarification that only the reddest of Kool-Aid drinkers would have the guile to believe. Such blandishments do not sit very well with independent minded voters who can sniff out such transparent flattery a mile away.   Read More »
