California Environmental Responsibility
About the Author
Joining this group shows a desire for California to be the leader in energy independence, alternative energy research, and most importantly environmental responsibility.

I only have insurance during semesters in grad school. Recently this summer, my local hospital made me drive back home with a broken arm because I forgot my checkbook. Without coverage, they said they could not bill me, it was "policy" that self pay clients pay before being treated.

This was just to get an x-ray and a cast, which my primary doctor prescribed to spare me from ER, because my primary care physician is very way cool, she bills. Dr. Elena Fitchev, for all you Northeastern Chicagoans looking for a really good doctor. She really is very ethical, sharp, and compassionate.

After driving back home, collecting my wallet, and arriving back, after one look at the x-ray the orthopedic surgeon said I "must have" surgery. So....I went home with a temp. cast, and called my brother, a Dr. at Cornell Medical Center in N.Y, for a consult. After speaking with my bro, I called the orthopedic surgeon back, and refused surgery. The ortho surgeon finally revealed that 99% percent of breaks will heal fine in a cast, which is exactly what my bro said.

Can you imagine? That quack wanted to put pins and plates in my wrist, which would have doubled the recovery time, and increased the risk of complications by tenfold. The bills would have added to over ten thousand $$,$$$.! Instead, thanks to my brother, I only wrote a check for $300 for a cast and an ex-ray. I wouldn't step foot into an emergency room in this country, at least not if I could help it.

Having been in France, Canada, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, London etc.... by comparison, this country has barbaric health care, run primarily by wasteful and greedy insurance execs.

It is a racket, bad in one way or another for everyone, and it needs to be stopped.

Please, support a more socially evolved public option of health care, and help America release the grip of greedy, wasteful mayhem.

Good God, here me now, please make this public option happen.

Amen
GARNER - About 10 years ago, I interviewed a Southern Baptist seminary-educated minister who was pastor of a Carrboro church. A strong proponent of the Second Amendment, that pastor told me the day might come when American Christians might have to take up arms against the state. His comments, published in The Chapel Hill News, didn't as much as raise an eyebrow at the time. No federal agents asked to listen to the tape recording of my interview with the pastor. Times have changed. Two of the Raleigh U.S. Attorney's claims against alleged terror suspect Daniel Patrick Boyd are that he made "radical statements" and that "he urged the group of young Muslims to raise money and learn how to handle weapons to prepare for a violent jihad by insurgents and fighters overseas." My young children got to know Boyd when he was proprietor of the Blackstone Market, a small grocery store Boyd co-owned and managed in Garner's Forest Hills Shopping Center.

My children said Boyd "was really nice and funny." He gave them discounts when they didn't have enough money to pay for a piece of baklava or a nectar drink. My children were sad when Blackstone closed. The government, however, is painting a very different picture of Boyd, calling him the mastermind of a terrorist cell bent on waging a holy war.   Read More »
It is hard to imagine getting into a predicament where I would actually need to kill an animal. Not being a farmer who is trying to raise cattle in a territory roamed by wolves for ions, I can only imagine the predicament today's cattlemen have gotten themselves into.

Wolves are one of the most majestic, socially evolved, and intelligent wild animals these United States have to offer. Yet, for centuries little red riding hood has given them a bad rap. Wolves are generous, caring, loyal animals. They are amazing hunters, great singers, and beautiful creatures. Please let's not let the meat eating greed of humans get out of hand with what was once the territory of wolves. Please, help encourage farmers to cope creatively with the help of appropriate resources, not guns.

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar has approved the Bush Administration's discredited plan to eliminate Endangered Species Act protections for wolves in Idaho and Montana.

It's a decision that could lead to the deaths of more than 1,000 wolves -- including wolves in the western Greater Yellowstone ecosystem!

Make your voice heard. Call the US Fish and Wildlife Service at 1-800-344-9453 (between 8:00 AM and 8:00 PM Eastern Time, Monday-Friday), select option "3" (for endangered species) and hit "0" to speak with the operator. Once you are connected, just deliver your own words or you can use this simple message: Please give your name....

I am calling to express my extreme disappointment in Interior Secretary Salazar's decision to implement the Bush Administration's flawed plan to eliminate Endangered Species Act protections for wolves in Idaho and Montana.

If this rule is allowed to stand, nearly two-thirds of the wolves in the Northern Rockies could be killed starting as soon as this spring. I strongly urge Secretary Salazar to stop the implementation of this awful decision and reconsider his approach to wolf conservation in the Northern Rockies.

Thank you for calling... if you have any doubts about this...

please remember...

There has to be a better way than killing wolves, and there is, numerous alternatives have been successfully implemented in the past few years, if given a chance these methods could avoid the needless bloodshed of an endangered species.

Killing livestock is not what wolves are meant to do, but if farmers insist on raising cattle in the midst of territory roamed by wolves for thousands of years, then it is they, the farmers who need to learn to adapt, for they are the true trespassers, not the wolves.

Have a great evening.
State attorney general asked to protect religious, legal rights

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 12/17/08) A prominent national Islamic civil rights and advocacy group today called on Georgia Attorney General Thurbert E. Baker to bring sanctions against a judge in that state who has repeatedly barred Muslim women wearing religiously-mandated headscarves, or hijabs, from entering his courtroom.

Yesterday, the Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) reported that a Muslim woman was jailed and then released following a dispute over whether she could enter the judge’s courtroom in Douglasville, Ga., while wearing her hijab. In the past year, other Muslim women have either been jailed under similar circumstances or barred from that judge’s court.   Read More »

A Muslim woman arrested for refusing to take off her head scarf at a courthouse security checkpoint said Wednesday that she felt her human and civil rights were violated. A judge ordered Lisa Valentine, 40, to serve 10 days in jail for contempt of court, said police in Douglasville, a city of about 20,000 people on Atlanta's west suburban outskirts.

Valentine violated a court policy that prohibits people from wearing any headgear in court, police said after they arrested her Tuesday.   Read More »
(LOS ANGELES, CA, 12/4/08) Following an action alert sent out yesterday by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), Fox television network reported receiving an overwhelming positive response from community members about a recent episode of “The Simpsons” that challenged anti-Muslim stereotypes.

The episode, which aired Sunday evening and is titled "Mypods and Boomsticks," highlights anti-Muslim sentiment by featuring a young Muslim character named Bashir and his family who face prejudice after moving to Springfield. In the program, Homer Simpson wrongly suspects that Bashir's family is involved in a terror plot. Bart Simpson befriends Bashir and defends him from bullies.   Read More »

From taunts to a beating, Obama election spurs "hundreds" of racist threats, crimes nationwide
By JESSE WASHINGTON
The Associated Press

Cross burnings. Schoolchildren chanting "Assassinate Obama." Black figures hung from nooses. Racial epithets scrawled on homes and cars.

Incidents around the country referring to President-elect Barack Obama are dampening the postelection glow of racial progress and harmony, highlighting the stubborn racism that remains in America.

From California to Maine, police have documented a range of alleged crimes, from vandalism and vague threats to at least one physical attack. Insults and taunts have been delivered by adults, college students and second-graders.   Read More »

WASHINGTON " Threats against a new president historically spike right after an election, but from Maine to Idaho law enforcement officials are seeing more against Barack Obama than ever before. The Secret Service would not comment or provide the number of cases they are investigating. But since the Nov. 4 election, law enforcement officials have seen more potentially threatening writings, Internet postings and other activity directed at Obama than has been seen with any past president-elect, said officials aware of the situation who spoke on condition of anonymity because the issue of a president's security is so sensitive.

Earlier this week, the Secret Service looked into the case of a sign posted on a tree in Vay, Idaho, with Obama's name and the offer of a "free public hanging." In North Carolina, civil rights officials complained of threatening racist graffiti targeting Obama found in a tunnel near the North Carolina State University campus.

And in a Maine convenience store, an Associated Press reporter saw a sign inviting customers to join a betting pool on when Obama might fall victim to an assassin. The sign solicited $1 entries into "The Osama Obama Shotgun Pool," saying the money would go to the person picking the date closest to when Obama was attacked. "Let's hope we have a winner," said the sign, since taken down.   Read More »
A few months ago I posted a blog in consideration of a forecast of 12 Battleground states and remember some of the reactions to that post. As I come back today Obama is ahead in six of those states and only about 6 more remain in which Obama is ahead in each one including Ohio and Florida. It things hold true this pattern will reveal one of the most stunning election results in American history way beyond my own expectations. I find it necessary to say THANK YOU to the FRIENDS who have stuck with me through this campaign. We went through alot here but held firm to our convictions. I am blessed to be back home in California at a time where family are even getting out and voting early for the first time in their lives.

Electoral Reform Electoral ReformOur democracy is in a descending crisis. Voter turnout is among the lowest in the western world, and America ranks in the bottom three of countries that hold free elections. The reasons for this democracy crisis are many: Redistricting ensures very few incumbents are at risk in one-party districts, and paperless voting machines call into question whether every vote is being counted. Barriers to full participation of candidates proliferate, making it very obstructive for third party and Independent candidates to run. These problems silence alternative viewpoints and decrease voter confidence. Continue reading ...

Here's a message from Barack Obama about how funds coming in are now DOUBLED, so here goes:
In these final three weeks, our opponents are signaling they will do whatever they can to distract voters and distort the truth, so we need to redouble our efforts.

The negative ads and smears seem to grow by the day. The most effective way to respond is by reaching out to more people than ever before with the truth -- the stakes in this election are too high not to.

We need to grow this movement by 100,000 new donors before Friday.

A previous donor has promised to match your donation to encourage you to give for the first time. This is your last opportunity to partner with a fellow supporter and make your donation go twice as far.

Your donation of $5 will become $10, $25 becomes $50, and $50 becomes $100. Double your impact by making a matched donation today.   Read More »

Associated Press

NEW YORK - A newspaper report Thursday said tens of thousands of eligible voters have been removed from rolls or blocked from registering in at least six swing states, but election officials quickly lined up to defend their registration procedures and said they had done nothing wrong.

The New York Times based its findings on reviews of state records and Social Security data, and said it had identified apparent problems in Colorado, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Nevada and North Carolina.

The Times said voters appear to have been purged by mistake and not because of any intentional violations by election officials or coordinated efforts by any party. It says that some states are improperly using Social Security data to verify new voters' registration applications, and that others might have broken rules that govern removing voters from the rolls within 90 days of a federal election.   Read More »
A message from those of us who think that wolves have had enough of the short end of the stick. This is why I donate $40 per week, for this commercial, simply because if McCain thinks so highly of his VP nominee, than I have to question their integrity, judgment and ethics.

The republicans are so ascew, backwards and out of touch they don't come close to getting it.

The aerial killing of wolves is so disgusting it makes the political history of Chicago look honorable. Sure we may have our own way of doing things, but at least our hearts are in the right place and our souls are intact. They don't call this the heartland for nothin.

Hi,

Have you ever heard of aerial wolf hunting? It's a brutal practice. Wolves are shot from low-flying aircraft or chased to exhaustion, then shot and killed at point-blank range.

Governor Sarah Palin, the Republican nominee for Vice President, promotes this barbaric practice, exploiting a loophole in the Federal Airborne Hunting Act to allow private wolf killers to shoot down wolves using aircraft. We have to get the word out about this!
