Bigotry Alert
About the Author
Blog devoted to identifying and highlighting racism and bigotry wherever it's present.

In an interesting story on CNN the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops sent a letter to the Senate insisting they include the harsh language of the abortion-banning Stupak Amendment in the health care bill.

And while the news media seems to focus on the Stupak Amendment (even though Federal Funds already are banned from being used in elective abortion, and even though the RNC and other Right Wing organizations like Focus on Family provide abortion coverage to THEIR members), they are not reporting on what the rest of the letter says:
We support the inclusion of all immigrants, regardless of status, in the insurance exchange. The Senate legislation forbids undocumented immigrants from purchasing health-care coverage in the exchange. Undocumented immigrants should not be barred from purchasing a health insurance plan with their own money.
So while on the surface, this letter seems to push the interests of the GOP, we see clearly there is still much fragmentation on the Right.

Clearly, the right has no unified set of ideals. I think this letter, while scary in its assumption that a Church can dictate the Law, also shows how split the Right is when it comes to morality.

What do you think? Will other media outlets pick up on the fact the Catholic Church insists on coverage for illegal immigrants? Will the Right embrace this letter, or reject it? I think I know what Joe Wilson would do ;-)

Thanks for listening and thanks for all that you do, fellow Democrats!

Best,
D. Tree
Clearly there are some posters on this blog in need of information (that is, information provided from sources other than Glenn Beck).

So, perhaps we should start posting little facts to keep the more combative members of this site informed. That way we can help them to either make better arguments, or perhaps we'll even persuade them to our side. Think its impossible? Well, one must remember even the most belligerent trolls come here for a reason: they must be confused or insecure about their own beliefs and they must be curious about ours.

So let this be the first installment of a series of posts sharing information that will hopefully educate us all.

Claim: most of the Founding Fathers were "Deists."
Fact: True
Question: but what exactly is Deism anyway?
The implications of Isaac Newton's physical theories of mechanics, which treated the universe as if it were a machine (hence the term "mechanics") built by a creating god yet running on its own principles independent of the interference of the creating god (though Newton never denied that God couldn't interefere, just that he didn't), encompassed much more than physical change and movement. Soon other areas of experience came to be regarded as mechanistic and independent of divine interference: social structures, economics, politics, and so forth. Each of these areas could be understood and manipulated solely through rational methods, since they operated through consistent and orderly laws and principles

The philosophes of mid-eighteenth century France developed this mechanistic view of the universe into a radically revised version of Christianity they called deism.
Drawing on Newton's description of the universe as a great clock built by the Creator and then set in motion, the deists among the philosophes argued that everything—physical motion, human physiology, politics, society, economics—had its own set of rational principles established by God which could be understood by human beings solely by means of their reason. This meant that the workings of the human and physical worlds could be understood without having to bring religion, mysticism, or divinity into the explanation. The Deists were not atheists; they simply asserted that everything that concerned the physical and human universes could be comprehended independently of religious concerns or explanations.
LINK

People who don't really understand what Deism is like to use it as a way to claim the Founders saw America as a decidedly Christian nation, and that there should be no separation between church and state.

The fact is quite the opposite.

The Founders, inspired by the Philosophes of the Enlightement, believed that religion and laws should absolutely be separate. They also believed religion was a bad influence on societies and was the cause for much war and suffering. They believed in the power of rational thought, laws, and government, to improve the quality of life through scientific progress, rational behavior, and improved social structures (a.k.a. what conservatives lamely call "entitlement programs").

So I hope that clears it up for anyone who is curious or confused about the Founders intentions, and about what Deism means.

Before I go, I'll leave you all with one more definition of Deism
Deism: Deism is a term coined in the philosophe movement and applies to two related ideas: a) religion should be reasonable and should result in the highest moral behavior of its adherents; b) the knowledge of the natural world and the human world has nothing to do whatsoever with religion and should be approached completely free from religious ideas or convictions.
Best wishes to my fellow patriotic Democrats, and thanks for all that you do to make the world a better place.

I just was forwarded an email from an elderly family member. It calls for a boycott of the new "muslim" stamp.
It was soooooooooo bad on soooooo many levels.

The source appears to be:
Peggy Smith
Ada County Highway District | 3775 Adams St. Garden City, Idaho 83714
(On Government time?) Now Ms. Smith may have forwarded this, but it was from a government computer and is clearly discriminatory.
Far from patriotic, I find this unamerican. I would remind the author that many muslim americans have also fought for our freedoms and that this country is made up of many peoples and many faiths. Violoent acts are certainly not confined to muslims. Just watch your local news and see how many of those arrested are muslim. Misguided people do bad things.
HERE IS THE email...
_______

USPS New 42-Cent Stamp!!! Celebrates Muslim holiday.
If there is only ONE thing you forward today... let it be this!

REMEMBER the MUSLIM bombing of Pan Am Flight 103!
REMEMBER the MUSLIM bombing of the World Trade Center in 1993!
REMEMBER the MUSLIM bombing of the Marine Barracks in Lebanon !
REMEMBER the MUSLIM bombing of the military Barracks in Saudi Arabia !
REMEMBER the MUSLIM bombing of the American Embassies in Africa !
REMEMBER the MUSLIM bombing of the USS COLE!
REMEMBER the MUSLIM attack on 9/11/2001 !
REMEMBER all the AMERICAN lives that were lost in those vicious MUSLIM attacks!

Now President Obama has directed the United States Postal Service to REMEMBER and HONOR the EID MUSLIM holiday season with a new commemorative 42 Cent First Class Holiday Postage Stamp..

REMEMBER to adamantly & vocally BOYCOTT this stamp, when you are purchasing your stamps at the post office. All you have to say is "No thank you, I do not want that Muslim Stamp on my letters!"

To use this stamp would be a slap in the face to all those AMERICANS who died at the hands of those whom this stamp honors..

REMEMBER ~ Pass this along to every Patriotic AMERICAN that you know and let's get the word out !!!

Here is something to chew on .... They (MUSLIMS) are getting their own stamp! BUT, don't dare to dream of posting the ten commandments on federal property! This is truly UNBELIEVABLE !!!

I hope someone looks into this.

Last night our President backed down the special interests and negative forces in Washington and across the country, and stood up for seniors, middle class families and everyone else who uses healthcare whether they have insurance or not.
I have never been so proud of a vote in my life as I am casting a vote to elect him!

Today we have a duty. If we want this, we can make it happen.
1. Call your Congressmen and Senators TODAY. Tell them you want the Obama plan, and you will be watching to see how they vote.
2. Email your friends and family, tell them to call their Congressmen and Senators.
3. Wear your buttons and talk to people in the grocery store, the post office, everywhere. This is how we won the election against the odds, remember? We can do this.
4. If you have a yard sign.. put it out again! Show support for our President!

This is a call to PUBLIC SERVICE.
We have a unique opportunity to be a part of something which will save lives for longer than we are alive. What a noble and worthwhile cause.
Tell a neighbor and save a women with breast cancer.
Tell a friend and save a child with swine flu.
Tell a brother and save a senior who can't afford medicine.
Tell a sister and save a man with prostate cancer.
How many of our fellow Americans must die because of lack of care or no care?
We can fix that!
LET'S DO THIS!
peace,

Shawna Forde, leader of Minutemen American Defense, is one of three individuals arrested June 12 by sheriff's detectives in Pima County, Arizona, for the murder of a Mexican American man and his nine-year-old daughter.

Based in Washington State, Forde's group is one of several border militia groups nationwide that refer to themselves as "Minutemen," including also the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps, of which Forde is also a former leader. Profiles on Forde and her anti-immigrant activities are available from the Southern Poverty Law Center and the Anti-Defamation League.

According to authorities, Forde and her two accomplices, Jason Eugene Bush and Albert Robert Gaxiola, broke into the home of Raul Flores and his family in Arivaca AZ on May 30th, apparently in the commission of a robbery. The invaders reportedly shot all three members of the Flores family who were present at the time, killing the father and daughter and leaving the mother wounded. While Bush is the suspected gunman in the shootings, investigators say Forde was the mastermind of the operation. Nine-year-old murder victim Brisenia Flores is pictured here from the local Green Valley News:

Forde is listed as the National Executive Director of Minuteman American Defense on the group's website, and the Arizona Daily Star reports that Bush, nicknamed "Gunny," is the group's Operations Director. The three are charged with two counts of first-degree murder in addition to burglary and aggravated assault charges.

The Minuteman American Defense website and blog contains numerous photos of Forde and friends at Minuteman and "Tea Party" events, including an Apr. 15 event in Phoenix at which Forde's favorite protest sign was one reading "Stop the Obama-Nation of America." The site also includes descriptions of immigrants as violent criminals, drug addicts, and "Subhuman Mexicans." Here is a photo of Forde in full border vigilante gear from the Anti-Defamation League:

Forde's mother tells the Everett WA Herald that she was not surprised to hear of her daughter's arrest since she had previously talked of staging home invasions: "She sat here and said that she was going to start a group where they went down and start taking things away from the Mexican mafia...," Forde's mother recalled, "...She was going to kick in their doors and take away the money and the drugs." Forde's mother also says that her daughter called her a few hours after the shootings May 30 and reported that she was taking refuge in a "safe house" in Arivaca: "I'm in hiding," Forde told her mother, "You won't believe what is going down here.... The mafia, they are kicking down doors and they are shooting people and they are looking for me."

Pima County sheriff's lieutenant Michael O'Connor told the local Sahuarita Sun that the killings were an "assassination," and said the killers were also looking for Flores' other daughter, who was not at home at time of the killings. Sheriff Clarence W. Dupnik, meanwhile, said that Forde as "at best a pyschopath" (KOLD, KOMO, KVOA, Seattle Post-Intelligencer).

Much is being made in the media of the current tension between the Obama administration and the right-wing government in Tel Aviv on the issue of Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, and I fully expect that coverage of Israeli reaction to the tough line on settlements taken by Obama in his Cairo speech will focus on the negative. Equally important but likely to receive far less attention is the applause and support Obama is receiving from Israeli progressives, many of whom are as critical of the settlements as their counterparts in the West.

A sampling of progressive Israeli opinion on Obama and his stand on the settlement issue includes the following from Gideon Levy in Haaretz, predicting hopefully that Binyamin Netanyahu and his right-wing government will ultimately have no choice but to acquiesce to Obama's demands:

"Washington will decide the fate of the West Bank settlements, and we can only hope it insists on their evacuation. Obama standing firm beside the revolutionary Mideast policy he has begun will light the torch of hope here, too. The battle of the titans, Netanyahu and Obama, is little more than a farce - let us recall the fable of the elephant and the bee, or the frog and the ox. Not all creatures can become as great as they think. Let's also be realistic: An Israeli prime minister has no option of saying no to America once Washington has dug in its heels. Netanyahu knows this better than anyone, and the time has come to explain as much to his 'patriotic' coalition allies.... Time is short but the keys are in the ignition, President Obama. Drive on to peace."

Barak Ravid also in Haaretz provides the following comments from progressive Members of the Knesset:

Kadima MK Ze'ev Boim said that "Obama's speech is yet another proof that Netanyahu miscalculated the foreign policy of the new American administration."

"The President's take on the Palestinian question is similar to Kadima's, and it's a shame that narrow political considerations prevented the Israeli government from espousing the two-state solution which is the only one that can ensure a Jewish and democratic existence in Israel."

Kadima MK Yohanan Plesner said that "Israel could benefit from the America's improved image in the Arab world and leverage it to forge a regional coalition, together with the moderate Arab countries, to counter Iran, but instead the government is engaged in marginal debates on outposts."

Minority Affairs Minister Avishay Braverman (Labor) said that Obama was right that the world's common enemy is extremism and that finding a common strategy is the way to defeat it.

"We should adopt a similar strategy in Jewish-Arab and religious-secular relations, as well as vis-a-vis the Palestinians," Braverman said. "We are committed to the two-state solution."

Meretz leader Haim Oron, for his part, welcomed Obama's speech. He said it was filled with inspiration, optimism and vision.

"The speech is the feat of enlightenment," he said.

Negative reaction to Obama's speech from right-wing Israelis, meanwhile, has been predictably harsh. Most outspoken in their opposition to Obama are settlers themselves and their leaders, whose hysterical, lowbrow rhetoric strongly echoes that of right-wing Americans. Like their teabagging U.S. counterparts, right-wing Israelis have taken to throwing Obama's middle name around as an epithet, accusing him of being a closet Muslim and of betraying Israel. Organizers of a right-wing protest outside the U.S. Consulate in Jerusalem had the following to say in a press release reported by Arutz Sheva:

"Barack Hussein Obama! Hands off the land of Israel! You cannot appease the Islamic lust for conquest by selling down the Jews and their Biblical homeland."

Settler leaders quoted in Y-Net likewise said that "Hussein Obama opted to adopt the Arab's bogus versions over the Jewish truth" and that Obama's speech "pandered to Islam." Sound familiar?

Reader comments in Haaretz and the Jerusalem Post make it clear that right-wing Israelis and right-wing Americans are finding each other and connecting online, sharing their hatred of Arabs and their contempt of Obama, and hatching all manner of hysterical theories on the coming end of civilization as we know it. Before long American news audiences may see images of their president burned in effigy not by Palestinians in a Gaza refugee camp but by right-wing Israelis in a West Bank settlement. On the other hand, the enthusiastic support Obama continues to receive from Israeli progressives sounds a hopeful note both for the peace effort and for the future of the U.S.-Israeli relationship.

Hey you all get voting-- The Repulsicans have already voted... Now it is our turn!!! Unfortunately there is is only an "A" not A+, so I had to settle for just an A...

Send this on,
Gretchen
I have difficulty getting to the computer regularly these days...weather, library closings(unexpected...), et al. I watched Obama's speech to Congress and was very impressed with it. He spoke to us all like we are the intelligent beings that we are and defined the problems we face and possible solutions well. I was relieved to hear him discuss Afghanistan further. I was pleased to hear a more thoughtful and nuanced analysis. I personally have been less than enthusiastic about the US being in Afghanistan in the first place...no country or empire that has ever gone to the area has ever been able to subjugate it and I do not see how it will be any different for the US. Jim Hightower's latest Lowdown highlights the issues surrounding Afghanistan including secret prisons and use of torture there. But Barack did mention a new look at the situation in Afghanistan to include economic development and help. I know that it is not easy to just leave once in...but, military might alone is not the answer.

Fundamental changes would have to occur in Afghanistan and Pakistan also. The Taliban(an offshoot of the Mujahadin the CIA organized)must be permanently defanged for everyone's sake...especially women!!! I would like to hear what anyone else thinks...and I will get back here when I can... Lee:-)   Read More »

Right-wing hack Glenn Beck has taken on his Fox News talk show to spreading paranoid fantasies of a coming totalitarian America, total economic collapse, and an armed citizens' uprising in defense of the constitution. On the Feb. 20 installment of his "War Room" segment, Beck and a paranoid panel of guests raised the spectre of the "bubba effect," a rise of individual militias across America in response to liberal tyranny, and suggested that America is on the verge of civil war.

The segment is pure melodrama, beginning with a warning that some might find the material disturbing and advising viewer discretion. Beck then opens with a nightmare vision of the year 2014 in Barack Obama's America: All US banks have been nationalized, Beck predicts; unemployment stands at between 12 and 20 percent; the Dow is trading at around 2800; the real estate market has collapsed; the government and unions control most business; and America's credit rating has been severely downgraded. As Beck and his guests continue, the picture gets worse: Since the Democratic victories of 2006 and 2008, the segment suggests, the USA we used to know has been transformed into the Islamic Socialist Republic of Obamistan, where income tax rates have risen to between eighty and ninety-five percent, and where we all must live in fear of the Obamist secret police who will soon be coming to take away our guns and bibles. Beck and his guests predict a Mad Max-like environment in America's cities, which have become no-go zones controlled by armed gangs presumably of angry blacks and illegal aliens. Meanwhile, the disenfranchised and betrayed "bubbas" of America's heartland have taken to setting up armed, self-sufficient communities hostile to outsiders, and to preparing for civil war.

Finally, Beck asks his guests how such a situation might be defused, and they suggest provocatively that perhaps it should not be defused at all but encouraged, since it is government that is at fault and such an uprising would be an uprising against tyranny in defense of the constitution. At this Beck feigns shock and surprise, though his barely-masked excitement at the prospect says he is really just playing along as his guests more-or-less openly advocate the armed overthrow of the US government. Indeed earlier that day on Fox, Beck had played the sad and fearful prophet of doom, showing us his shaking hands to prove how afraid he is at the prospect of civil war in America, and warning us: "You need to prepare."

I wonder how many "bubbas" who watched Beck's show are, even now, stocking up on guns, ammo, and survival supplies for the coming apocalypse: Ka-ching!

President Barack Obama's interview this week with Arab news network Al-Arabiya appears to have been a success. The president's first interview since taking office, his appearance with the network's Washington bureau chief Hisham Melhem was an effort to extend a hand of friendship to the Arab and Muslim world, and included Obama's acknowledgment that Americans "have not been perfect" in their dealings with that world:

"My job is to communicate to the American people that the Muslim world is filled with extraordinary people who simply want to live their lives and see their children live better lives...," Obama told Melhem in the interview, "...My job to the Muslim world is to communicate that the Americans are not your enemy. We sometimes make mistakes. We have not been perfect. But if you look at the track record, as you say, America was not born as a colonial power, and that the same respect and partnership that America had with the Muslim world as recently as twenty or thirty years ago, there's no reason why we can't restore that. And that I think is going to be an important task."

Obama's interview included a re-statement of his committments both to the Israeli-Palestinian peace process and to follow through on his promise to address the Muslim world from a Muslim capital during his first months in office. It also included an aknowledgment of his own personal connections to the Muslim world -- connections for which Republican bigots viciously attacked Obama during the 2008 campaign, but which can hardly hurt him now as he begins the work of repairing US relations with the Muslim world:

"My job is to communicate the fact that the United States has a stake in the well-being of the Muslim world, that the language we use has to be a language of respect. I have Muslim members of my family. I have lived in Muslim countries.... And so what I want to communicate is the fact that in all my travels throughout the Muslim world, what I've come to understand is that regardless of your faith -- and America is a country of Muslims, Jews, Christians, non-believers -- regardless of your faith, people all have certain common hopes and common dreams."

Obama's interview with Al-Arabiya comes as his new Mideast envoy, former senator George Mitchell, heads to the region to restart a peace process long neglected by Obama's predecessor, and follows his contact with Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas immediately after his inauguration Jan. 20. Obama's overtures to the Muslim world are certain to offend many conservatives, who regard Arabs and Muslims with extreme hostility and suspicion, and who think that the only people in the Middle East we ought to be talking with are the Israelis. Many of these were deeply offended when Obama's first call to a foreign leader was to the Palestinian president instead of his Israeli counterpart, and are likely to be equally offended that his first interview was with Al-Arabiya instead of the Jerusalem Post.

I say tough cookies for them. Elections have consequences. While President Obama has neither said nor done anything to suggest that he is about to "abandon" Israel (as I'm certain his conservative critics would love to charge), he clearly recognizes that a Mideast policy based on an exclusive relationship with Israel and on callous disregard of Arab concerns has not worked. The time for change has come, and from where I sit it looks like President Obama is off to a damn good start.

Hi everyone...I am back! I tried to log in to the site for some time and could not get in. So, I have been unable to post to my blog. Of course, clean energy has been in the news and the mess in Tennessee has been covered. It was a disaster just waiting to happen. As far as 'clean coal' goes...This is Reality has a new ad and it is great. I watch CNN a lot and have noticed the ad that the council for oil and gas exploration has run has changed. They do acknowledge wind and solar in their background now...how clever of them!!!

Global warming...critics are still trying to discredit it. The way they are trying to discredit it is very clever. Most people do not distinguish between "weather" and "climate". Global warming is long term CLIMATE change. Weather plays a part...but only a part. Also, since this is climate change...then one can experience excessive cold as well as excessive heat. Another factor to consider is that within a climate...there is variation. I am a native of New England and winter can vary from mild to very cold and/or snowy. This year we are having what used to be considered a 'normal' winter!!!!

And finally, I will comment on the economy and Republican opposition to the proposed package. The Republicans want to deny most people a rebate because any number do not pay 'income tax'. Well, Social Security, Medicare, payroll taxes(Federal, State and in some cases, county/city tax), real estate tax(yes, even if you rent you do...how do you think the landlord is getting them paid...remember the landlord is trying to make $$$...he/she gets all the expenses paid through rent if possible!)and finally, SALES TAX!!! Sales tax is a truly regressive tax as poor people pay it on almost anything they buy. Only a few states exempt food and clothes(I live in one of those states...). There are other taxes that most of us pay(excise tax on cars, etc.)but, I have covered most of the biggies. When will the Republicans learn? They claim that they are going to reshape their party to be more responsive to the needs and concerns of the American people after the drubbing they have just taken in the last election. If the stated opposition to the latest stimulus package is any indication of the new Republican party...pleasssssssssssse.

I look forward to any comments you may have...

Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter. - Anon.
I will cry today.
Not tears of pain, or grief, but of relief and joy.
Years ago I pledged to raise my children with the goal of making the world a better place. Today I will have succeeded, at least in part, in achieving that goal. In listening to a report yesterday, I suddenly realized, all my children voted for Barack. They all voted for the man, not his color. They voted their conscience. They are adults and did this without my urging.
Today makes to world a better place.
The WORLD knows it. There are celebrations globally.
Out of the darkness, into the light.
In one generation we did much to destroy the stain of racism which I grew up, not experiencing myself, but watching others experience.
IN ONE GENERATION! How powerful is that. If we can do this to improve our society in one generation, what else can we do?

I write today with a grateful heart.
Our nation was built on principals which still work after more than 2 hundred years.
Today we are installing a new head of state.
No more "Great Moments in Presidential Speaking".
No more cringing at the pronunciation of common words.
We have a new leader who is an example to our children and ourselves.
A level of leadership to which the rest of our national leaders can aspire.

The challenges we face are monumental. No one person can do it all alone.
It will take all of us to follow Barack Obama's lead out of the darkness of economic and social depression. Out of the wars which break our financial and diplomatic backs.
Partybuilders, our work is not done.
I pledge to continue to sign petitions, write letters and endeavor to promote the work toward world peace, environmental health and social justice.
I pledge, to wear my peace signs and light the peace sign on my porch as a reminder that we still have to work toward peace.

Thank-you, Friends, for all you have done and all you will do.
Thank-you, Barack Obama.
Thank-you, Mrs. Obama.
Thank-you, Howard Dean.
Thank-you, Mr. Kaine.

Peace to us all,
marsha
YIPPY-- Have waited 8 YEARS for this!!!
YIPPY!!
I have just finished reading a book...Obamanomics by John R Talbott. It is an excellent explanation of the current economic mess and what Obama will do if he can when he is President. I hope that some of you will read it and record your thoughts about the book.

Hi everyone...I live in Central MA and was affected by the historic storm that hit MA and NH really hard...both states were declared emergency areas and the National Guard was sent out to help. I guess most of the world knows by now just how affected we were...many saw pictures of the damage on National TV and CNN showed several pictures of Worcester, MA. There was NO POWER!

I went to the Neil Young concert at the DCU Center here in Worcester and a group, Rainforest Action Network, had a table there. (Neil Young utilizes used vegetable oil in all the vehicles used on his tour...even his '56 Caddi runs on veg oil!!!!) This group's focus is on rain forest preservation and the truth about mass produced biofuels...check them out at..."http://www.ran.org">RAIN FOREST NETWORK

Marsha alerted me to a problem connecting to Obama's transition site...Change.gov. I checked the problem out and the link as it has been transmitted by Podesta and others adds a // in the middle of the URL. So, you have to type in the address box....http://www.change.gov.
I have not tried to post a comment on the blog there, but if any one else does try and has problems...please let me know or let the Obama Transition team know... -Lee

As we all know...now that Barack Obama has been elected...we must remain involved. Here is a link to another commentary by Jim Hightower http://jimhightower.com//node/6662.

Also, Hightower included two websites to book mark and read...
